The Capitol vs. District 12

Once Katniss and Peeta arrive at the Capitol, Katniss notices a number of differences from her life in District 12. How different is life in the Capitol from our lives now? Is our community more like the one in the Capitol or District 12? Think about the people, the city, the food, and daily activites.Would you want to live in either place? Why or why not? Be sure to give specific details from the text to support your answer.

  1. Our lives are much different from the Capitol, because it is farther in the future and they have advanced technology. They also wear different clothes and enjoy watching kids kill each other. But even though our community is different then theres, I think that our community is more like the Capitol's. If I had a choice to live in either place I would live in the Capitol, because I would have as much food and luxury as I want, and not have to worry about the Hunger Games.

  2. I would like to live in the Capitol because the people there gets a lot of big meals everyday. They help train the kids for the Hunger Games and gets to make the outfits and stuff for them. You woulod not have to worry about being in the Hunger Games either.

  3. District 12 is different than the capitol because you have not a good living. You dont get better food and a warm shower. I think some of our life is like district 12 and the capitol. I would want to live in the capitol because you get better food and a warm shower.

    2. Them choosing the Capitol is not them being greedy, it is just what they think would be easier, more enjoyable and more resourceful than living in a District, let alone District 12 being the most impecunious District.

Would you rather wake up every morning to a starving stomach and a family that is striving to survive? You would most likely be working as a coal miner, so you would be working hard labor every day with a salary of little to no money. You would not even be able to afford even a single piece of bread, so you would have to buy grains and make your own. You would not even know what sugar tastes like. And to top all of that off, you would dread every year because you would have a greater chance of getting murdered from the Hunger Games, and if you don't get chosen as a tribute then you will have to watch people you possible know and dearly love being heartlessly slaughtered.

Or, would you rather have a delicacy for every meal and a warm shower every night. I doubt the Capitol even knows what starving feels like.
I'm not 100% sure if the Capitol actually attends a job or just gets paid from the District's hard work, but if they did then it would not be half as bad as what the Districts have to go through.

      Now, what would you rather?

  4. I agree with Joel, because our life is like the Capitol's with the food, we are never hungry. We do not like to watch people kill eachother though. I would not like the Capitol though because most people who are poorer than one is are angry at them because of the way they talk and act.

  5. The Capitol is very rich and district 12 is very poor. Katniss and her family have little money and struggle to get food. I think that i would like to live in the capitol because it is a rich place and whatever you want you can easily get.

  6. I agree with Ashleigh because the capitol you don't have to try and survive you can just automatically have your basic needs to survive. Also because you wouldn't have to work as hard for something like in District 12 you have to work to. They are different because District 12 most people are poor and have to work for survival. Also I don't believe that the Capitol gets picked for the Hunger Games, I think it's only the Districts. The Capitol is rich and doesn't have to fight for survival or worry about being picked to be a tribute. Also they are different because the Districts, if you don't have something you have to use a tessera and if you take a tessera you have to put your name into the bowl for the Hunger Game tributes. Also in the Capitol you are rich and so you can afford everything and don't need to borrow anything normally.

  7. I think our lives here is way different from The Capitol. The place is more advanced and the food is so fancy. Between living in District 12 or the Capitol, I would choose The Capitol because everything is much more easier and faster. Munaf D.

  8. I think that our lives are not that different from the capitol. Other then the fact of their accents and entertainment from watching kids fight to the death, we hold many similarities. For example, the Capitol and us don't hunt for food and we don't starve that often. While in District 12, there are people starving everywhere. Our community is like the Capitol for these reasons. I would like to live in the Capitol because I wouldn't have to worry about starving and I could live the fancy life.

    1. I agree with Nimish, we are very similar with the capitol. In the capitol food is given to you with a push of a button, while in district 12 you risk your life to get it and usually starve. Also people in the capitol are very similar to the people we are used to, while district 12 almost everyone is poor. With that in mind I would much rather live in the capitol then district 12.

  9. A few differences between the capitol and our community is the capitol is in the future and has more advanced technology than we do. Also they all have fake accents and don't care for those who are not like themselves. When Katniss and Peeta were on the train at dinner, Effie was joking about there death.I don't think our community is like the Capitol or District 12. We are not as advanced and rich as the Capitol, but we are not as starved, caged, and poor as those in District 12.I would not like to live in a rich, snobby city who force kids to kill others for there entertainment such as at the Capitol. I also wouldn't want to live in a city where we would be caged in and starved such as in district twelve.

  10. There are many major differences between the Capitol and District 12. The Capitol is a rich futuristic city that only cares about how good they look and how fancy they talk. District 12 on the other hand has a low living standard and they do not really care about how they talk or look. Since District 12 is the farest from the Capitol they do not get much attention to themselves as they should get. Therefor District 12 is rarely recognized and is extremely poor.

  12. Many of you are stating that you'd rather live in the Capitol than District 12 since it has so much more in terms of technology, food, and opportunity. As Nimish said, though, they are also the ones who force two teenagers from each district to die every year for their entertainment. Would you like to have that on your conscience? Would that make you feel guilty? Or do you think you'd be okay with it since you and your family are safe? Explain your answer.

  13. it is different in almost every way. The food the eat, the houses they live in, the clothes they where it is all different. The capital is much different then our cities too, ot has way more high tech devices like zooming in and out windows. They also where wigs and die the skin. I would like living in the capitol only if they didnt wear wigs and die thier skin. I would rather live where i live now because im a used to daily life. I would live in the capitol if i had to pick between district 12 and the capitol. It is a much bigger and better place.

  15. The Capitol is the wealthier one but Distric 12 is the one with skills and atributes because they fight to stay alive. We are more like the Capitol becasue we get food easily and don't have to fight for it. I would rather be one of the higher people in Distric 12 becasue I could get the food I want but still have some of their atributes. This way the Districs also wont hate me becasue im from the Capitol.

  16. OMG! I would so rather live in the capitals except for all the freaky styls there. One big reason is because of the food. Oh man I swear my mouth was watering when I was reading what they were eating. It sorta reminds me of HATCHET. I would always get hungry when I read that book. And they always made us read it before lunch tiome so by the time we got in the lunch line it was a feeding frenzy! NUMMy! I totally wish I lived in the capital cuz all the stuff there has better quality. But something in disrict 12 makes me want to go there and that is the hunting and being outdoors. Aaaah i long for the woods of district 12!

  18. In the Capital, everyone is rich and in District 12 everyone is poor and can't feed themselves or their family. In the capital many people have enough money to dye their bodies all different colors. Along with getting their hair dyed all different colors at any time of the day. In District 12 they are known for coal and that is one of the few jobs there is, and you still won’t have a lot of money to pay for food for you and your family. The one thing that is an advantage is the woods. With plants you can eat and make into medicines out of, berries, and game that you are able to hunt and get a small amount of food. The only thing with the woods is that you can be in big trouble!

  20. I think the capitol is very different than district 12 or owr city. They have high honor but no body likes them. We are not like the capitol and still differ from district 12. We don't have to beg for owr food and starve most of the time. I like my home now and would not want to change.

  21. In the capitol everyone is really rich and thinks the people in district 12 are dirty and not good mannered. District 12 almost every person is poor. The peoplke in district 12 have to scavenge for food and break the rules bye hunting. The people in the capitol get food whenever they want and never break rules tomget food. The people in the capitol also wear crazy clothes and wigs. The people in district 12 dont.

  22. i agree with Munaf i would want to live in the capitol rather than district 12. If u live in the capitol u dont need to work to survive because you are rich. in distict 12 most people are starving and they have to work getting there food and sometimes they have to sign up for tessare. Also u have more freedom in the capitol unlike distict 12 when your starving and bored.

  23. I think that our community is more like the district 12. In the capital I feel that the people are more rude and very rich. In our community the people are very caring and would help you if you were starving.

  25. Our community life and their community is very different because, its very far in the future and we are in the past and their technology is much more different then ours and people dont care if your taken care of unlike the U.S we help homeless and give them food etc.

  26. The capitol is more like our society because of their modern ways of life. For example, unlike district 12 they have cars, surgeries, an active city all night long, and technology such as the showers, just as we do. The citizens of the capitol also always have food. However, some of the features of the capitol are a more exaggerated version of our society. This includes the fact that the surgeries they have there include getting you skin died green while ours are more touch ups to the face and skin. Overall, our life most resembles the capitol life because of its technology and easy life.

  27. Our community differs from the relationship between the Capital and District 12. At first glance most would live in the Capital. The people in District 12 have to fight harder making them (mostly) tougher than the people in the capital. The people in District 12 work to get there food by hunting and trading what they have, but the capital just has to push a button. The Capital has the force to put teens through the Hunger Games. The capital forces the out lying districts to compete in the Hunger Games , but the USA helps people around the world like in Iraq and Iran put there country back to gather when someone or something destroies it. Also the people in the capital feel the need to never be old or odd. They grotesely alter themselves so they ever show the effects of aging and can stay in style. With these factors in consideration I would probaly choose District 12.

  28. our community and the capitol have a lot in common but also are very differt because sometimes we eat all the nice elegant foods that they dobut sometimes we eat foods that arent all that nice. we do have hot running water but our showers do not have a bunch of buttons.we also do all of the crazy things like they do like get tattoos. we are more like the capitol because we dont have to fight for survival and i would much rather live in the capitol because i would rather have stomach full then empty.

  29. The life in the capitol is more advanced than our lives now, you can get food by the press of a button which you can't do nowadays. I think our live are more like the capitol because people in our community aren't starving as people are in district 12. I would rather live in the capitol than district 12 because i like have food easily accessible rather than hunting and starving. Even though the capitol is cruel in many ways i would still like it more than starving in district 12.

  30. I feel as though our community is similar to the capitol because we share a few of the same characteristics. Some might be that we have complete access to any food that we desire at any time, we are also able to express our independant styles the way Effie Trinket usually does. Yet if you relate our world to district 12, things will begin to sound familiar. There are people all over the world who live in the same sistuation as people in district 12 do. Sadly it's very common that we hear nearly everyday of stories like this. Weather the woods being the only place for food, or if people have to fight to the death to keep their families safe.

  31. I feel that the captiol is way safer to live in than district 12 . In district 12 you have constant fear of dieing of hunger . In the capitol you dont have this fear and everything is giving to you . Most of all i would rather live in the capitol for their richness and safeness compared to district 12.

  32. The capitol is safer because its surrounded by all the districts and at the highest point. People are odd skin color and have weird hair designs. They have better homes because they have all the best supplies ever made. Also have the best food because like everything each district that are submitted.

  33. The capitol is safer and more assured than district 12 but i wouldn't be able to live in a place that is so materialistic and enjoys watching children die. I'd rather fight starvation and the odds of being in the hunger games by living in District 12 then be a safe, well fed monster of the capital.

  36. Perhaps it's worth considering that the Capitol is an individualistic culture, and given that the majority of you commenting on this thread are likely to live in such cultures, your answers are unlikely to deviate from your current position. A better position would be to consider that if you were living in Panem, you wouldn't have a choice whether you were born into the Capitol or into a District. Thus, the point is that our decisions are already made for us, and we cannot attempt to answer the question in any state of neutrality.
