Peeta's Best Hope

On the night before they enter the arena, Peeta tells Katniss, "My best hope is to not disgrace myself...I want to die as myself....I don't want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I'm not" (141). What does this tell you about Peeta? What other books have we read where characters have fought against changing who they are inside in order to survive? How are these characters similar to and different from Peeta?

  1. Peeta does not want to go through dehumanization and he wanted to be unique. The book Night fights against changing themselves so they can survive easier. Elie is the same as Peeta becuase they were both dehumanizised. They are different because Peeta has more choices than Elie

  2. I think that it tells us that Peeta will try not to do things will regret later like killing others for a tiny peice of edible plant. In the book Night, people were starving and had no other choice than to kill their own loved ones for their food. I think peeta is more loyal and loving then them because he knows thatothers will become a "monster" and kill other people and he knows and will try not to.

    1. I agree with you Ashleigh,Peeta is to nice to kill anyone in the Hunger Games. Even in a couple of hours after he could of killed someone and he could of said "What have I done"? He is just to nice.

  3. I think Peeta is standing up for himself and he likes himself. He doesn't want to become a "monster" and turn into Titus or anyone bad. In Night, Elie didn't want to be the same as everyone else. Also in the Giver, Jonas didn't really want to have that big of a job as Receiver of Memories. They are similar because they all don't want to change who they are. They are different because they are all going through sometimes totally different from one another.

  4. I think Peeta is realizing what the games do to the tributes. He doesn't want to turn into a "monster" and change who he was in the district. I think this shows that he is not mean or is not trying to hurt Katniss, I think he does not want to show much weakness to anyone.I think he is still trying to figure what he is going to do when the games begin. He might have been tricking us all along. In night Elie fought for those who he loved. He didn't want to give up what he had but with him being in the concentration camp he had to change who he was.He had to put himself first in order to survive. I think he is similar to Peeta by not wanting to change or give up the ones he loved.

  5. it tells us that he doesnt want to turn into some kind of crazy animal in the arena. night is the other book where this happened. When the people kill each other for crumbs of bread. these caracters are different because they are actually about to die, because they didnt have the ability to hunt for food like peeta and katniss.

  6. This tells you that Peeta does not want to turn into a monster because of being a tribute and killing the others off. This tells you that Peeta is trying not to be weak, also that he does not really want to give up while in the games. Some books that are involving the same thing is Night because they are fighting over bread crumbs and clothing. Still the stories are very different because when at the concentration camps they could not have weapons to fight the others off with. Also that Peeta and Katniss are able to hunt when Eile was not, so Katniss and Peeta were able to get the food they need but there is still people trying to kill them.

  7. This tells you that he doesn't want to change. He just wants to be him self and doesn't want anyone to change that. I feel that it would be kind of hard not to change when there are 23 other people trying to kill you. In the book night Elie and other Holocaust victims had to change and adapt to the environment including the people. I think that Elie and Petta are similar because they both had to fight for there life; but in the end they were still the same person.
